Review: Sony MDR-J10

I’m a bit of an audiophile. For those of you who know me, you’ll know that I have abnormally small ears that I often complain about. So when I’m selecting headphones, ear buds are never an option. I prefer over-the-ear type, but since I have little income, I decided to give these clips a shot.Sony MDR-J10, $10 at local retailers

And boy, was I blown away. For $10, these are damn good and well worth every cent.

The cord is a decent length (3.5 feet), though lacking a knob for volume control, which I usually prefer. Unlike buds, they don’t hurt one’s ears and they gently rest over the ear without falling off every few seconds. In fact, once they’re put in place, they rarely budge unless deliberately moved. So for someone who is restless and often fidgety or listens to music while they work out, these headphones are a feasible option.

As for sound quality, they’re decent. What more do you expect from $10 headphones? There isn’t much bass or treble. It’s just sort of mid-range, and if one is on the go, I fail to see why that would matter if they’re as awful at multitasking as I am. The sound is at least crisp and clear — miles ahead of anything you’d get from Apple.

Like any other headphones, the cord does tangle, but because it’s coated in some sort of rubber, they’re fairly easy to unravel. And did I mention they’re comfortable? By comfortable, I mean I can barely feel them when I have them on.

I owned a pair of these for two years in white. I used them damn near every single day, and when they finally gave out, it was because the coating on the cord wore away from being wound up and unceremoniously shoved into my pocket.

So if you’re broke and looking for something to replace those crummy Apple ear buds, here’s your solution. Multitask away.
